New dishwasher- miele or john lewis?

Hi, we are about to buy a long awaited new dishwasher :j

I would like a stainless steel fronted one, but performance and durability is also very important. I have narrowed it down to the John Lewis own brand one at £399 (discounts and quidco would bring it down to about £350) or the miele G1232SC which is about £650.

The John Lewis one is actually a better fit design wise in our existing kitchen, but I have heard so many good reviews about the miele (including WHICH best buy) that I am wondering if it is worth spending the extra on it?

The John Lewis has a 3 year guarantee, the Miele seems to have only 2 although I have read some posts where Miele have 5 or 10 yr but I can't find anywhere offering that? The Miele does have a free cutlery set (!) but I don't really need it.

Does anyone have either machine and can offer an opinion?

Thanks :D

I would buy Miele on the basis of proven durability and consumer experience.

I have owned a Miele tumble dryer for the last 15 years and it has given faithful service even with repeated daily use.

Friends have also reported lifespans of up to 25 years for washing machines.

Guarantees don't mean much when the product is this reliable.

I would compare their products to the over-engineered Mercedes of 20 years ago before the bean counters took over.

It might be worth enquiring from John Lewis who makes their machines for them. Years ago when we bought our first dishwasher we went to John Lewis in Southampton, they recommended the Hotpoint because they were actually being built by Bosch at that time. He showed us two identical machines; one said Bosch, one said Hotpoint - the Hotpoint was £100 less. It lasted for years !

I suppose the best solution would be to buy the Miele from John Lewis, then you would get a top rate machine and Lewis's excellent after sales service (but there again, you shouldn't need it !)

John Lewis appliances are manufactured by the Electrolux Group. Most of the washers come from Italy, not Germany as JL allude to. Dishwashers (I think) are made in Poland.

Buy the Miele, but bear in mind that nobody else but Miele can repair them (which annoys me) as they will not allow any technical information outside of Miele themsleves. Spares pricing is, frankly, horrific. However you likely won't have much cause to experience either.

    Hope that helps.

Coincidentally we are in the process of buying a kitchen from john lewis with appliances. We were going to have the John Lewis dishwasher which you are describing. However, on Saturday we went into finalise things and were strongly advised NOT to have that particular dishwasher as they had been experiencing a lot of problems with it. Even the store manager had gone for a different brand because of the problems. I can't remember what they said the problem was but there were pretty adamant that I should steer clear (which I thought was fairly honest of them!).

    Hope that helps.
