Cable broadband wireless FAST/wired SLOW

If two machines next to each other inside your home network are getting different speeds, it can only be down to the machines, or your internal network.
Otherwise all the machines would be affected.
If they've replaced the modem/router it's unlikely to be that, likewise if you've tried different cables it's unlikely to be them.
If you've tried a diferent NIC then, again it's unlikely to be that.
Which really only leaves software.
You state they are all Athlon's in the 2400-2800 equivalent, what drivers are you using for them?
I remember at one point the chipset drivers for some Athlon motherboards were causing network issues due to something or other in them (I can't remember if it was part of the network driver for the onboard NIC, or a secondary bit of software that was basically a firewall installed alongside the main drivers).
What sort of firewall/AV software are you using?
I ask because going back a few years I had an issue with slow speeds on one of our machines which turned out to be due to the firewall installed on it (IIRC the firewall was effectively limiting the speed due to it not coping with the connection).
Other things to check would be that your supehub doesn't have any from of throttling running, I'm not 100% sure if the Superhub does it, but a lot of routers do let you limit the speed to specific machines (either by connection type, basically wired or wireless, or by physical port used, or internal IP address), and it's possible the superhub has been used before and was reissued without getting a full reset.
As an aside, I love networks when they work, but hate them when they don't.
Some of the things I've found limiting the speed on specific machines on my home network and my brother in laws, in the past have included.
Firewall settings (or versions - I had a version of Zone Alarm that limited the machine to 1mbit as it was struggling*)
Bad wiring (about the easiest to rule out)
Windows settings for the network adaptor.
Bad drivers - IE out of date, or simply incompatible with something else (I've had issues with online games disconnecting oddly due to specific drivers and server settings**).
An NIC that was overheating - it would start off at 100mbit, then after about five minutes drop to kilobit speeds (that took ages to find).
Windows versions - Things like transfers from Windows Xp home to Pro being 80mb, but the other way round being <20mb (I think that was fixed by changing nic).
*Back in about 2001.
**And for a while the popular Linksys WRT54GL would cause players of Warcraft to lose connection, without getting a connection lost message (your character just stood there).0 -
I'll try to answer in turn - Athlon/mobo drivers; They are what came with the machine and updated as requested/required. No issues.
Firewall; Avast, up to date.
Superhub; There is one setting that has been bandied about the forums, something to do with received IP flooding, in it's firewall settings. This has been changed, and makes no difference.
IE has been reset, and all cookies/cache etc deleted. As already stated Chrome is slower than ie.
You would think the opposite normally, wouldn't you? The computer that has basic Windows on, and not clogged up with software ought to be faster. But isn't. And wireless is faster still. Heyho.0 -
it's prob going to be down to RWIN being set too low and other networking settings on the iffiy pc. See if you can find an older copy of MZUltimate Tweaker and only run the network elements of it, or maybe DrTCP.... I got a feeling they'll help.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/index.htm look here, at the Tweaking and MTU section (left-side of page menu)......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

I've been through all the network card settings, adjusting them, as various forums suggest, then setting them back, when nothing works.
GunJack - At what point has it been suggested that there is an 'iffy' PC? ALL PC's are running fully to spec, your comment confuses me?
The best spec PC has the worst net connection...the next worst loaded with software, is next, and best connection is wireless, fully loaded with software, that does not only manage the 30Mb, but exceed it...
:GROAN: If people post, but don't read. How many times have I reiterated that point so far, and also listed in the title?0 -
"iffy" as in it's network connection  Think it's you that does not understand posts that would help you... I'm with kwikbreaks on this one...I'm outta here.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Methinks; the obvious answer is; the reverse of what people are used to...
I cannot understand it myself.
It's OK that people call themselvelves out.0
