Moving home, gas, electric, water, phone etc. questions

So I can see from current suppliers British gas, sky, bt there are forms to fill in for move of address.

1. What happens with final bill. Does it end the day we move as we instruct and make sure I take meter reading for gas and electric?

2. If I move sky tv and BT phone, do I get locked into a contract again as I'm out of contract?

3. What happens if the gas and electric from current house and to new house are different suppliers, who will be supply on the new moving in day?

All so confusing with lots to consider with a move

  • 1. You're liable for utilities while the property is in your possession. If you're a tenant then that ends when your tenancy ends, for example if you left on April 15th but your tenancy was until April 31st, you would owe for all electricity used between the 15th and the 31st even if you don't live there. You don't need to take meter readings but it will help get a more accurate bill.

    2. That depends, most likely yes. Most providers will want you to be in a contract so when signing up for new services or moving home they will try to lock you into a contract again, you could try and ask but it's unlikely they would let you continue your out of contract service usage. From my experience a 12 month contract is likely when moving services.

    3. Electricity and gas providers are very flexible, unlike telephone / tv / internet they don't need to have billing information to provide services, the services are provided and then they bill after the fact.

If you have contacted your current provider already and instructed them that you will be moving soon then it's probable that you won't need to do anything, they will have everything ready for the day you move and will continue billing you as normal.

If you haven't already contacted your suppliers about your move then when you move in take down the meter readings contact the supplier you want to move to and provide the readings, they'll sort out the rest for you and you will get a bill from the old supplier covering the usage between the day you took possession and the day you transferred your services.
  • Thanks. Not instructed them yet until get moving dates or know things in right direction.

Well I've got sky tv at the moment which I want to continue, but the sky works on the back of my bt line. I'm sure sky will do some loyalty move thing, otherwise I'll play the game and say I'll go to virgin :)

Scenario is if sky move over ok, it still needs telephone line to work I believe? But I don't want bt telephone services, as I'm able to pick up a deal at work to get better phone and fibre package on different supply, so does that mean I'll have to wait for phone like before sky install?

Sky or Virgin will lock you into a contract if you take them when moving house , if you do threaten Sky , make sure Virgin supply the new house...
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
