Put in an offer - agent tells me higher offer has been made, but won't tell how much?

If the told you what the offer was - would you really believe what they say? There may not even be another offer!0

The broker probably will call the agent yes. Is the house empty or will the vendors be buying on?0

I was going to say the same...youre going to raise your offer 10k in such a short space of time....
When you upped your offer 5k was this after they had told you another offer had been made? Did they give you any indication this was higher or was it 'we'll speak to seller'?
I think you need to cool off...would it be worth telling them you have found another property you are interested in and see how that pans out? It might even save you 5k ...
Me personally? I would ring back tomorrow and say that you can't go any higher...you've seen another property you would like to put an offer in (might not hurt to have another property in place even if you dont actally want to put an offer in as EA's have a habit of asking you whos it with or whats the street name) and you want a yes or no on your offer ...put the pressure on them.People don't know what they want until you show them.0 -
The suggestion that there may not even be another buyer is what slightly worries me! The simple fact that he claimed telling me the amount of the competing offer was illegal (obviously rubbish) set off a bit of an alarm bell.
The flat is occupied by the seller but been advertised as chain free. I have no idea where the vendor would be moving to.
I think I'd be prepared to increase by another 5-10k (which would still be 10k under listed price) and is within reasonable budget for me. I'd just have to reduce the amount set aside for renovation and do some of the non essential work incrementally.0 -

I put in an offer, 25k less than asking price
They (allegedly) consulted vendor and called me to say that the vendor had received another, higher offer, over the weekend. But at least from looking on rightmove, no other agencies are marketing the property, so unless the offer was received privately(!?) then this may be bulls##t ..
I upped 5k and I asked whether that was going to be near the mark. they said that they'll "speak to seller". They would not tell me whether it was higher or not.
Now waiting for response from seller.0 -
The person making the other offer may have viewed the house before you and only just put an offer in over the weekend. You could do find out what the vendor is doing, the vendor may have told the agent at the beginning of marketing that he will move out but this may have changed, always worth checking..0

But if there was an offer, why would the agent only have found out about this after calling vendor? Weird
Good advice about vendor/chain. Will follow up on that. Thank you.0 -
How long has the place been on the market?0

Standard EA tactic. Sometimes it's true, other times....
Ask which law. I managed to get one to divulge the other offer once.0 -
Dear all
I offered for a flat this morning, and had a call from the agent in the afternoon, telling me that the vendor has received another offer that was higher. I asked him to tell me what that offer was but he refused to divulge, claiming that it was "against the law". I struggle to believe that...and do not want to waste time offering up in increments, or offering more than I need to....
Any advice?
It's not an auction, so why should he tell you?0
