Utilities in new rented house

I have just been approved to rent a house. I move in a week today. The new house suppliers for electric and gas are British gas and ovo. Do I have to open accounts with these suppliers or can I just 'switch' suppliers?

It is the norm to take readings on the day you move in/get the keys, and contact each company with those opening readings. You take on the existing suppliers, then can change to whoever you want to - sometimes takes a couple of weeks for new supplier to take over so you need to sign up witht he existing ones to ensure you have power etc for the time being.
Your tenancy agreement might state you are not permitted to change suppliers but this is unenforceable. However, it is always helpful to tell the landlord when you leave, who you have changed to.0 -
