Holiday Destination for a couple

I'm hunting for an August destination for us. We're a 32 year old couple, no kids. As a basis of comparison, I have none; I've never been on holiday before - yes I know, sad act - and in our 10 years together, we've been away once to CenterParcs about 9 years ago.

So, in that, any good recommendations for somewhere nice and warm with good beaches but also some cool stuff to do (besides the usual rambling, looking at old bits of rock and buildings, galleries, etc). Water sports potentially, though we're not sporty people at heart, more of a give anything a go at least once types! Anything cool that we wouldn't have done before basically, though I can't envisage us trying to learn to surf all week hahaha.

We're willing to spend probably £1200 or so all in and would like to get a week out of it. Ideally we'd like to avoid families with noisy kids (sorry!) and we're not too into the whole drug-fueled club scenes. I guess, more adult stuff.

Any suggestions?

What sort of place are you looking to stay in - self catering, hotel with hb, all-inclusive?
How long a flight, or don't you mind?

Don't mind about flight times. I think we'd prefer self-catering, though possibly a hotel with a restaurant attached for the option.

Also, nowhere you get blatantly ripped off or hounded by loads of locals trying to sell you cooked spiders, rugs, bits of pottery or miniature statues of three-headed monkeys

OK, my inexperience is probably shining like a lighthouse!

I agree. You'll find if you travel in late June or early September you can give the benefits of decent weather as well as finding a lot less families are on holiday.

Companies such as Thomas Cook do 'Adult only' hotel packages which might be worth considering if you just want an all-in-one package deal rather than having to book all the constituent parts of your holiday separately.

Some ideas to where you could go?

Rhodes is a nice mixture of beaches and history; the nicest place to stay is the Old Town.

If you are willing, feeling adventurous and can hire a car, the Costa Del Sol (Spain) is a great place to visit for a mixture of beaches, incredible scenery and historic places to visit. Alhambra (Granada) isn't to be missed, Seville is a wonderful city, the annual Feria in Malaga is a good bit of fun if you are around when it is on and there are a great array of beaches, some a lot less popular than others but still very nice. As long as you avoid the 'Brit' hotspots, its one of my favourite places in the world.
