Self employed in CIS

My hubby is employed on the CIS scheme for the first time.
Last year he earned 20000 with nearly 4000 taken off him at the rate of 20%
We have to fill in the self assessment and I am unsure of a few things. I wonder if any one can help?
Can I claim the purchase of a van (2500) plus milage he did (12000) miles?
How much can he claim for laundry? is this on a list somewhere?
Can I claim mobile phone costs, work clothes. If I can claim on these - it all adds up to 8000 expenses. It sounds like alot against a 20000 wage.
Any help appreciated. Thanks

Yes you can. All of them can be offset against tax.
The mileage may be a problem as (according to m accountant) you have to keep detailed recorders of all the business journeys you make. Therefore it is more straightforward to allow for insurance, fuel, tyres, servicing, repairs, bulbs, etc etc. this often works out to your advantage.
You can claim for new tools, all expenses related to a job (eg materials, consumables etc). Claim for liability insurance, mobile phone, advertising, work wear. In fact anything he needs for his business. Additionally, my accountant allows £20 per week to cover washing of clothes, running the business from home etc.
Go on the HMRC website and there is a lot if info about this. Additionally, they run local workshops for newly self employed people, again on their website.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
