My Hitachi (CRT) TV started going into standby a few minutes after it was switched on, & now won't go on at all, anyone any ideas if its repairable? And how? (Money's tight  so a new one isn't an option)
Anytime;)

just take it to an old fashioned repair shop and get an estimate. It is more than likely a very simple fault but sadly fixing things doesn't seem to be very popular these days..

A mate of mine had a problem like this. Apprently the tube inside the tv had gone and it had to be repaired. Dont know if this is the same thing but it sounds similar. Is it still under warranty if so just ring the shop you brought it from and tell them the problem (they usually know exactly what it is) and they should send someone round to fix it.

It could also be the power supply on its way out. Not a huge job to replace one and the parts aren't expensive, it's just a bit time consuming.
I would get a quote and go from there.

You should not attempt to repair such a TV set yourself, the CRTs use high tension (high voltage) generated inside the set, and even if it is unplugged from the mains there is a residual potential charge remaining in the capacitors. The reason the set shuts down is probably part of a safety cutout to reduce the risk of fire or explosion. Suggest you ask a tv repairman for a quote.

I agree with getting a professional to do the job. I used to work in a TV repairers and getting a shock from the back of a CRT tube is no joke (as I found out the hard way in the middle of replacing a power supply! You end up looking like this  )

You soon learn to listen and use two large screwdrivers to discharge the tube so it doesn't happen again! And yes, that's the way I was taught to do it!
