Christening Gift ideas for a 14 month old?

My brother's child is being christened in two weeks time, and I am absolutely stumped as to what to buy. We're not close, I've seen the child once, his wife is very exacting as to what she doesn't want, i.e. no ornaments, no baby bangle, no silver, and I haven't a clue what to buy! As the child is in effect my neice I feel I should buy something decent, and I am a godparent for my sins, but I know that whatever I buy will be shoved away somewhere, so I'm loathe to spend a lot of money, but I wanted to get something that was a bit special - can anyone come up with any ideas?

how about a premium bond or a cheque (crossed) so they can open a bank account for her?The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

Hapless, at the risk of sounding really cynical, my brother's wife asked for Next vouchers for the child's christmas, and I was told by my mother not to do that as the vouchers would only be spent by the wife on herself, so I'm loathe to give a cheque, however Premium Bonds does sound good, I'll have a look at them now, thanks for that.0

Christening Guest Books are a good idea. I bought a handmade one off eBay. It had sections for pictures and sections for all the guests to write a message to the baby. Everyone thought it was really thoughtful and original. It also only cost about £15.
Hope this helps.

I agree with hapless but rather than give them a cheque to open a bank account for the little one why not open the bank account yourself - that way you know where the money is ! I did this for my brother's 4 kids and now every b/day and xmas i put money in each account, then on their 18th b/day's they will each get the bank book and can spend/save the money as they want, not as their parents want.Wise men talk because they have something to say, Fools because they have to say something0

How about a star named after your niece? Nice touch - something that mum can't exchange or whatever and I think it's a great idea to have something that's forever linked to your niece and it's not too dear either!!

I love the star idea, I've just checked it out now and it's such a lovely idea, so I think I'm going to go for that! And I also really like the christening book, as I could take it down to the christening and the "reception" thing afterwards is in their house, so everyone could write then - fantastic, thanks so much for your help - next problem is I misjudged the weeks and the christening is next weekend, not in two weeks time as I thought!!!0

A friend of mine bought a bottle of wine (sounds daft, but hear me out). She did her research, bought up a recent bottle of very high quality wine for about £20-30. The wine is to be laid down and will be at optimum drinking in about 20 years, so the idea is the child can sell it for a wodge of cash or just drink a very nice wine on their 21st birthday!
