Cheap TFT from Germany but what taxes do I pay??

Options
HI all,

I called a company in Germany supplying TFT monitors and had a very good quote from them for a 19inch monitor.

They said that if I am having it delivered to the UK then I pay no German sales tax and would therefore be eligilble for a further price reduction....this brings the price down even more and including delivery is a great price...

My question though is:

When I receive the TFT do I pay any tax in the UK for it??

Or do I get the lot for the tax free price quoted??

Thanks
L

you will more than likey have to pay UK import charges if customs see it, not sure what percentage it is.

you dont have to organise anything to have it imported you pay for delivery and customs will withhold it from you untill you pay the import charge if they get their grubby little mits on it!

would be best to take find out the charge and have and have that money put to one side untill it arrives.

There are details here on the DHL website about Import duty
It says that import charges are 5% and VAT is 17.5%

would be intersted to know the price they quoted you, I am also after a nice 19inch monitor.

    Hope this helps!

I'm surprised they think they can sell it tax-free; I'd expect that would only be true if you are registered for VAT

You will pay VAT on import if not at source; as the German rate is lower (16%), you might as well pay there.

Import Duty is NOT applicable to goods from Germany (or anywhere in the EU)

You will need to pay VAT "SOMEWHERE"

You choose which is the cheapest.
    Source or destination ?
    Germany or UK ?

    It's a Xerox XA7-19i.
Spec: 19 inch TFT, DVI, 8ms response time, 700:1 contrast, anti-glare screen and 3 yr manufacturers warranty.

    Looks sleek too:

I've only seen it on ebay and one UK web site where it was over £300.

The German shop is selling it for Eur 354 (including German tax), plus Eur 40 for delivery. Total Eur 394

Without the tax the total is 345 including delivery.

I'd be surprised if anyone can find it in the UK for a similar price.

Looks like if I have to pay tax somewhere, it'll be cheaper to pay the German tax.

    Thanks

I'm sorry. I don't understand why you persist in the fantasy that this could be tax-free.

The single European market dates from 1992 I believe

You pay VAT at ?~16% in Germany (charged when you buy it, just like a UK retailer would charge 17.5% VAT as you're buying the item).

Then because it's bought in the EU you DON'T pay UK VAT when you import it as you've already paid VAT to an EU country.
