I shred my newspapers - they are lighter than other leaflets. The only thing I have to be carful about is the ink coming off and spoiling the item to be posted. So I wrap the item in polythene bag (not bought ones but recycled from post received!) first. We get a free local paper delivered to us every week.

Junk mail, leaflets and free magazines in supermarkets, old Thompsons directories, old bills

    etc etc
  • Cost of electric and wear and tear. Would it not be cheaper to buy proper packaging?

The shredder cost me £5 off of gumtree (should have been about £85 new) plus if I run it at full capacity for a day nonstop it’ll use about 7p of power. So if I find somewhere within walking distance this is defiantly cheaper than buying packaging.

Thanks for all the responses. There are some really good ideas here.

I just go to my local estate agent and they give me all there old auction leaflets. They also give me the shredded paper from their office while I am there. I go the day before recycle day and it is all bagged up ready to put out

PS its for my chicken coop though not packing :D
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.

angelsmomma has beat me to it. If you have any offices near you, approach them as they have a lot of paper they need to get rid of. My OH's office keeps a box where everyone dumps unwanted paper etc which is later shredded and put in recycling bins.

shred junk mail and old bills -ask if your friends and family have stuff they need dealt with I am sure that should be more than enough to be going on with
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.
  • Take newspapers out of other people's recycling boxes? Ask them first if you feel bad about it but I can't imagine anyone would mind - I wouldn't, only too glad to free up some space

See if you can catch you local paper delivery boy or girl....I know my daughter usually has a fair amount of leaflets/papers left over every week (usually 12 or so). We end up taking them to the tip every so often as the recycle collectors wont take them if there is too many!

I'd be glad of someone taking them off our hands for further use.

Yes, a local paper delivery boy/girl would be a brilliant idea. When we used to deliver the papers a few years back, we used to have about 15 papers left over every week. I felt guilty putting all those in the recycling bins so I asked at the local library if I could leave them there every week for anyone to take home (as not all roads get the free local paper) - and they said no due to health and safety reasons!! So I had to take them to the tip every fortnight or so.

    Another thought,

If you have any local restaurants ask them if they have any old menus they no longer need.

most menus are printed on pretty decent card (though check there not laminated) and most restaurants change their menus every so often and are left with loads of old menus to get rid of.
if i had known then what i know now
