Worried about a returned CC payment

in Credit cards
Hi everyone. I recently paid off a credit card, as I transferred the outstanding amount to a new 0% interest card.
Once the c/c balance showed as £0.00, I went online to cancel the monthly direct debit from my bank a/c. There was a £100 payment showing as due which is the amount I was paying off each month, and a window popped up asking me if I wanted to cancel this forthcoming payment to which I clicked yes. It was due to be taken from my account in the next 2 days, so I thought that was cutting it a bit fine, but I figured if it wasn't possible to cancel it, it wouldn't be offering me the option. Then I cancelled the whole direct debit.
The next day I saw that the money had been taken from my bank account after all. I was so busy that day that I didn't follow it up, thinking oh well, I'll be in credit on that card now. Will use it for the next couple of grocery shops.
Then yesterday, I went online to the CC account (Virgin Money) and I see that the money was credited to the card as a standard direct debit payment, showing me as £100 in credit, then on the same date, returned to my bank showing a debit of £100 (listed as "Unpaid Direct Debit NSY") and I've also been charged £12, listed as "Return Pymt Default Su". So I now have an outstanding balance of £12. (I've just paid this off.)
I am really concerned because I am just about to apply for a mortgage - what does it mean, will this show up as some kind of late payment or default charge on my credit rating? It's so frustrating, because I had just paid the card off and all I was attempting to do was to stop the direct debit payments continuing to a card with a zero balance. Will obviously phone VM in the morning but will they be able to remove this 'default'? I don't care about the £12 (paid it now anyway), just don't want a black mark on my file.
