Prices of some electrical goods have dropped dramatically in 4 years. If they say that they are offering a replacement of the same spec. and you are unable to show them that the spec. is of lesser quality then I am afraid you have an uphill struggle.I have retired from a career in Financial Services........Thank God. Any advice given may be as a result of senile dementia so dont take it too seriously.......0

I normally defend insurers on this board, having worked in the industry 20 years. However, I have to agree with owens3116 on this.
My widescreen TV cost me £700 a few years back. It is also a Panasonic and I bought it because I felt the picture quality was superior to others I saw. I could have had a £200 Goodmans set but there was no comparison between them.
If an insurer tried this argument on me I would argue that they were not replacing like for like. The current comparable set in this case is the Panasonic 32" WS TV. I would also compare tech specs in detail. You can bet the cheaper set does not have the same level of connectivity (scart and other sockets) for a start.
I can understand their argument if I tried to argue the current replacement for a 32" CRT TV was a 32" plasma tv but I do not think this is what the original poster has in mind.0 -
I take it is a CRT (big fat heavy type i.e. not LCD)?
And they are offering you a CRT by Goodmans or someone?
Why don't you write a letter to Panasonic asking them what is the modern equivalent to your old model? Ask them in the letter to comment on whether they think a modern Goodmans 32" CRT comes close in quality etc to your old model (tell them the insurer is offering this and you don't believe the quality will be the same). Then send a copy of their reply to your insurers with a demand for a replacement as recommended by the manufacturer.
You can also go to a specialist Audio & TV supplier in your area and ask for an insurance replacement quote - hinting that you could be a customer in a few weeks with your insurance money. I did this with Endsliegh insurance - but in my case it was Endsliegh who told me to do this.
If you don't like your insurers reply you can always tell your insurer that as you have not recieved satisfaction you intend to take your claim to the Insurance ombudsman, allow them 14 days to respond. Read the insurance ombudsman website for the correct procedure to be followed (or ask in here).0 -
