So, it looks like it's an upgrade edition. But to judge from the ads it will work with existing installs of W7, Vista or XP. I wish there was a decent (i.e. cheap) XP to W7 upgrade path, then I'd do my Samsung netbook.

The upgrade installer doesn't just look for Windows 7. XP or Vista are equally OK.

So, there is absolutely no discounted (new) Win8 upgrades anywhere? Even for students/infirm/heroes/OAP's/etc?

Mine was £25 from microsoft but I think that deal is closed. I'd give it away now if I could!

Remembering that you may also have to pay for/upgrade your anti virus and possibly other software.

Erm...no.

Compatible with computers running Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP (SP3), will upgrade both 32 and 64 bit versions

In addition, there are various methods to install it anyway.
