    I have read the article.

If she was genuinely objecting to the number of disabled parking spaces, she would be writing to the people running the car parks or starting a campaign in the paper she writes for. Just how does her parking in a disabled space send any message to anyone unless she puts a big sign on the car saying that choosing to park there is a protest against the number of spaces?

Not all people with BB are exempt from paying road tax. You can only get the exemption if the car is solely for the disabled person's use.

and you can only be exempt from road tax if you get HRMM too.
not everyone with a BB gets HRM

So we have a disability pecking order then.
That aside, if you read the article rather than react to what others who haven't read it either have said you would know that her frustration comes from the AMOUNT of space given over to disabled spaces. Are there REALLY REALLY that many people out there with genuine mobility problems requiring a dedicated parking space? In an otherwise full car park there will always be empty disability bays. If the people on mobility want a tax payer funded space, let them pay road tax.

Anyone, not only DLA recipients can get a blue badge, DLAHRM gets the VED exemption automatic entitlement criteria as does :

    - a registered severely sight impaired [blind]
    - anyone in receipt of a War Pensioner Mobility Supplement
    - anyone awarded at tariffs 1-8 of the AFC and certified as having a permanent disability which causes considerable difficulty / inability to walk

You don't need to on DLAHRM to get a blue badge anyone can apply under the discretionary entitlement criteria, for example :

    - anyone with a permanent disability and are unable to walk
    - anyone with a physical disability that means they are unable to walk very far without experiencing severe discomfort
    - anyone who has a severe disability in both arms, and are unable to operate all or some types of parking meter
    - there are special rules for children under three if the child has a specific [ bulky rule] medical condition
    - there are special rules for children over three if the child has a specific medical condition

You and the origin of the article need to grow up and get some one to slap you with a 'clue stick'
    disability pecking order
There is no Blue Badge pecking order, you have one or you don't
Are there REALLY REALLY that many people out there with genuine mobility problems requiring a dedicated parking space
Clearly more than the amount of available disabled parking spaces
If the people on mobility want a tax payer funded space, let them pay road tax.
Its a European initiative, its called the European Blue Badge Scheme

Liz Jones gets paid for making up sensational stories to help reduce the perpetually falling readership numbers. Richmond as a major tourist area may have a high[er] than average number of BB spaces. Its the retirement to the area and the visiting millions who need those BB spaced called tourists that bring mi££ions to the local area subsidising the local shopkeepers and tourist attractions every year. Millions of disabled people don't have blue badges and millions of blue badge holders don't get free tax disks. Liz Jones is no fool - that photo is not on public road.

She is deaf - she doesn't say to what extent. That hardly affects her mobility.

She also thinks you need a PhD in order to fill in the forms to claim a BB!

So can only people with mobility problems have BBs? I am sure i have read that people have them for MH issues or for sight issues.

I think the ones complaining about others attitude towards them and the use of disabled parking spaces sometimes need to look at the own attitude and behaviour and consider if they themselves are contributing to the way they are treated by the public at large.

i know several physically disabled people and none of them report suffering any of the antagonism that one could assume is so prevalent reading these boards.

Wow. Touchy touchy. Thin skins and the usual response of the intolerant toward alternative opinion. I keep forgetting that this forum is the exclusive domain of one persuasion and anyone who doesn't have a bleeding liberal heart should butt out. Sorry folks but I have personal experience of both sides of these arguments and while i support the systems we have i abhor the cynical abuse of those same systems. Almost as pathetic is the tendency for some contributors to revert to the playground in their Yah-boo name-calling rhetoric.
Put it this way, I have a life outside this forum and I now look at this forum mostly for entertainment. Certainly not for education. Or to change anyone's opinion. Couldn't care less frankly. One voice in a very small pond. Have a nice day, y'all.

By definition of criteria, those that can walk unaided to the supermarket door should not have one.

How about those who can walk to the door but struggle to then get around the supermarket.

The car could be parked less than 5 meters from the door. Does this mean if the person can walk 5 meters but not 20 they shouldn't be awarded a blue badge.

There's a reason why these things are assessed on multiple criteria, because not everything or everyone is as black and white as can walk/can't walk.

At my local supermarket the bays are in a place where if you can walk unaided to the door you wouldn't qualify for a badge under present regs but somehow many can and do.
