Different 0871 numbers are charged at different rates from BT landlines. The highest rate is 10p/min at all times.
Nearly all of them are 10p a minute from a BT landland at all times (a few are less but nobody seems to use them). You are very likely to pay more than 10p a minute if phoning from anything other than a BT landline (eg a mobile phone or phone box). The person you are calling gets a substantial cut of the call revenue (can be as much as 6p a minute).0 -

OTOH, 6p, 7p, 8p and 9p per minute rate (as well as the 10p/minute rate) 0871 numbers are used properly by some of the gateway call providers (see the MSE International Callchecker).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
