Free to you: provided you are using someone else's phone!

Seriously: they are horribly expensive, and not to be confused with 0800 numbers, which are free.

    NO!!!!

Different 0871 numbers are charged at different rates from BT landlines. The highest rate is 10p/min at all times.

Nearly all of them are 10p a minute from a BT landland at all times (a few are less but nobody seems to use them). You are very likely to pay more than 10p a minute if phoning from anything other than a BT landline (eg a mobile phone or phone box). The person you are calling gets a substantial cut of the call revenue (can be as much as 6p a minute).

OTOH, 6p, 7p, 8p and 9p per minute rate (as well as the 10p/minute rate) 0871 numbers are used properly by some of the gateway call providers (see the MSE International Callchecker).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
