I (and many people) use 123 Reg for domains and I also use penguin-uk.com for hosting.

I was looking at Mr Site recently as I wanted to set up my own website so I could broadcast a webacm, through a bit of research I found out about geocities and !!!!!!... They both offer FREE websites with limited facilities (!!!!!! allows FTP transfer, Blog, Photo Album, and new Planet Builders, Site Building & File Management Tools, 20MB Disk Space). It's easy to set up your site and personalise the pages, add links photos etc.

The website address you get with !!!!!! is: http://whateveryoursonchooses.!!!!!!.com

If you do decide to get Mr Site don't get ot from that link you posted (£35), it's £18 at Amazon with free deliver.

You need to have a think about what you want the site for really. Mr Site is great for a beginner, because it offers an easy way to host web pages. One of it's disadvantages is that it gives you a pretty small amount of hosting space - only 150MB. After trying a number of disasterous cheap UK hosting companies, and one good but expensive one, I found a really good US company, http://www.hostgator.com/ offering 50GB of storage for $6.95 a month. That's about £3.50 a month at the moment. Mr Site charges £2.50 a month after the first year, so it compares pretty well. I have used hostgator for a year now without any problem at all. It does not have the same level of hand holding that Mr Site does though.

Like seaweasel, I would also reccomend 123-reg for independent domain registration - very good.

In summary, if your son is a bit of computer wizard, he may well be better off going for a full blown web hosting package, but if he is a beginner, go with Mr Site.

Thanks for the info Martin, he's not a computer wizard. Basically he wants the site to display his art work. He's at uni and was recommended Mr Site by his tutors and I believe some of his fellow students have already set up a site via this option.
It loks like 123-reg for the domain then, thanks to both for the recommendation.

With Mr Site, I don't think that you need to register your web site name independently - they can do it for you. I would check who owns the domain name if they do that though - you or them. Some hosting sites will own the name and charge you to move it elsewhere in future (I got stung like that once with one of the disreputable cheap hosting sites).

It's still better to go with your domain with someone like 123 reg though, you'll have more control and over it and it will probably be cheaper (a UK domain is about £6 ish for two years). Penguin are £12 a year for their basic package. Also, bandwidth is usually more important than disk space (unless you need to upload a lot of large files), check what Mr Site are giving you.

Also there are lot of free gallery scripts you can install, sometimes hosting will also have a control panel to make this easier. Alternatively you could also use a site like flickr or Photobucket, and forward your domain to your account.
