The Co-Op offer a basic bank account.

Unfortunately Co-op no longer offer this account to people who have already gone BR. You can open one before you go BR, just don't tell them you are going down that route, and they should let you run it after you go BR.

Barclays are the only other bank that you can open an account with while BR and they will let you have an account unt even if you owed them money before.

You could also try a Cashplus Gold Pre Pay Card.

Or if you only have benefits there is the Post Office account.

The problem with Barclays is they offer nothing that allows you to manage your finances effectively. You can't access Internet banking, you can't print off statements using the machines in branch and you have to order statements in branch to collect later in the day or next day (collecting mine in Monday). Despite being told I could opt for email statements each month which the branch staff have never heard off.

I'd recommend using cashplus tbh. They don't have a high street presence but have many places accepting cashplus deposits. You can also add the creditbuilder option and manage your account online with no fuss
  • I have the CO-OP basic one and I got it a couple of days after i declared BR.

I was with HSBC and they said they wouldnt freeze my account etc. and it would be fine. Imagine my surprise that after declaring all my money was frozen and this was just before another months pay went in. I spoke to HSBC and unfroze my account for one month. In this time i had to sort a new account out and get my money out of HSBC.

CO-OP accepted me no problem and i still have the account today. I have a debit card and can manage my account online.

Co-op will no longer give accounts to people who are BR. They will open them to people who are not and generally won't close them if you are subsequently made BR, but I usually say don't let them know of your intentions and try and open it as early as possible before you go BR so you have a record with them.

That's not a problem, it is a recent-ish change and if you weren't around here when the news hit it would have passed you by.

As do a lot of us, but you went BR quite a while ago and the Coop have now changed their policy.

to qualify Co-op's current policy a bot.......as at this moment, they won't open a Cashmnder account for anyone who is Undischarged BR.

Once Discharged {AD or ED} then applications can be made successfully.

Unfortunately it appears that if Undischarged, then Barclays is the only neat option.

Once Discharged, then Co-op can be given a crack too...but I'm not sure what advantage that may give?

I say this as Barclay's general policy at the moment is to deny internet access on their basic accounts for Undischarged BRs..... a facility Co-op maintain throughout BR.

However, once AD, Barclays will permit internet access, and apparently provide a slightly better internet system than Co-op?

I have to ask, why the concern about Barclays?

They apparently don't have issues if an account applicant is BR, and Barclays were a creditor.

How long do you have to go to discharge, either automatic or early ? After my discharge I got a basic account with both Co Op and Natwest with no problems.

If you expect your discharge soon it might be worth waiting for a little longer and then applying
