"Living salads" from Lidl
Options
If you want to grow lettuce, look out for the punnets of Living Salad Leaves from Lidl at only 89p. The roots are in compost and the punnets contain loads of of little mixed lettuce seedlings which can be split up and transplanted out. You would probably have to pay about £3.99 for a strip of lettuce seedlings in a garden centre which would only contain a few plants so these are really good value if you have some means of protecting them from late frosts and low temperatures until the soil warms up.

Would they be ok on a south-facing windowsill, or would it get too hot?0

There!s very little compost in the punnets so probably very little nutrition to keep them growing strongly for long unless you take some out and plant them up into bigger pots on your window sill. Should be ok on the window sill though if compost is kept moist. Worth a try!0

Thank you. Will try, but am notorious for killing everything. Just have not got the touch.0
