Reeds Rains & Atlantic/SSE. Missold?

What with the news about SSE misselling electricity, it got me thinking about when we moved back to the UK in 2010 and rented a flat through Reeds Rains.

The day after we moved in, I got a phone call from someone claiming to be from Reeds Rains or affiliated with Reeds Rains (I can't remember exactly which) saying as part of the moving in service they offer to help find us the cheapest deal on utilities. Flustered and surrounded by boxes, I took what they said to be true, and they told me that the best deal they could find for us was a fixed one with Atlantic. I didn't question this (younger and naive) and just assumed they were who they said they were and the deal they had found me was the cheapest on the market.

Now, reading about the fine SSE have received, and realising that Atlantic are part of SSE, i wonder if in fact the person on the phone really was who they said they were, and if I was tricked into believing I was getting the best deal out there.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has received this 'service' from Reeds Rains (I am aware about the whole Spark thing), and what I should do next. I guess I'll speak to Reeds Rains to see if this was something the offered to new tennants.

  • Just to add, what I am also unsure about is if I was missold, how could I definitely claim that I had lost out. The tarriff they offered may have been cheaper than the electricity supplier who the last tennant was using, but they may not have been the cheapest, and checking the cheapest supplier was on my to do list (as it always is when I've moved or reached the end of a fixed contract).

    Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions?

If it was Reeds Rains who told you they deal with Atlantic for all their tenants and it turns out you may have lost monies, then i dont think you would have claim against Atlantic. Your claim if there was one would be against Reeds Rains. The responsibility to check the tariff was yours.
