any idea how much to chage main stopcock

I was told £200+ by a 'nasty' plumber (long story).

By the way, he claimed he charge £60 for hourly pay and just told me roughly the quote.

After seeing some YouTube domestication, I thought it just a roughly 20 mins works with proper tools and skills.

this plumber sound it looks like a hugh job - a bit like re-arrange the whole house pipe.

Any idea the market reasonable price for
1) change the stopcock completly
or
2) just put up a new top bits (the washer parts) and put some white thread round the tap

thanks.

I had a guy round to fit a new radiator and got him to do mine, it took him about 5 mins and he charged me an extra £5. I provided the part. He only changed the middle bit of the stopcock though as that was the bit that was leaking.
Can you turn the water off in the street? If not you will have issues.

You should read his other thread and see the pic. Its £80 - £ 100 IMO in his case.

    Cheers

  • We paid a handy man £40, took him just over an hour as it was a in a tight location.
If you can turn the water off from the street it makes life a lot easier (we waited till out water meter was fitted).
  • I had a plumber put in a stop !!!! he also fitted new sink taps and he charged me £160.
He provided the taps and stop !!!!.
It seemed dear but he did a good job.

  • i had a stopcock replacement late last year.

first, i had a handy man come round and it was hopeless, he didnt have a clue what to do to convert the pipe from imperial to metric.

so, I got a plumber in who had it done in two hours and in that time changed pipework and moved tap location all for £120. :j

thanks to you all for all the great advices and information. I really need those as I always get scams from tradesmen.

They got the money and only do less than 50% work. I already assumed the best is to get 70% but it never go to my way. I happened to my windows, doors, garden gates, pipe works, central heating, kitchen extractor.

And the worst is that I used up the money and have a not properly function home environment. So had to save more hard earn money to redone the awful works but never know if that would be done properly and once for all etc. Every day is a challenge and it make me depress.

so I have to thank all of you for your insight and information. It really make a different to me.

    More update from me :
At last, I get the information from the water company and now know where is the main outside stopcock. So in worst case, I could go out and turn water off there.

I bought a new wrench and twist the nut a bit and turned up the water volume more, and now it's just a little little wet (not dipping). I now put more and tighter tape on the joint. It seemed work OK at this moment. No more flooding kitchen and hourly wipe floor.

I found if I completely shut it (but the stopcock still let water in), the dipping became worse.

I hope this work a bit longer so I could have more time to save money and time to find a proper plumber during the coming summer months.

And now with all your lovely advice and information, I could equip myself better to get the stopcock done.

thanks for all your great help.

Please anyone ...please keep share their story/advices/information, I am much appreciated.
