I can see you have a negative opinion about those who work in IT as sitting behind a desk doing nothing all day. I can assure you there is plenty of physical effort required and I do my fair share of the physical work that is required. I think most that have responded to my thread have missed my point which is why give a manager a task to do and then not allow them to delegate this task if they wish. As someone else said surely the end result is more important and that the job was completed and to a high standard, who completes the task is surely irrelevant and if it was so important for me to have all the skills required to do the entire job why give me a team of technicians????

Sorry no, I was speculating that that was YOUR opinion of IT work. I have no negative opinions of IT workers, some of my best friends work in IT ;)

I apologize if I didn't spell it out for you but as you are a Manager thought you would be able to see the inference.

And, surely the end result should be keeping your manager happy as you have only been employed for a few months and could be sacked for any or no reason during the first two years (usual exceptions etc).

And YOU have missed the point of our replies as well.

If I, as your boss, asked YOU PERSONALLY to do something I wouldn't expect you to kick off about how your team of technicians could do the job leaving you to do really important stuff or whatever you deemed fit to do yourself.

I would expect YOU to do it.

Now if I asked you to arrange for some task to be completed I wouldn't care whether you did it, a member of your team did or someone off the street did it.

See the the difference. If you can't then can I suggest you find a job where you are the ultimate boss and can tell you ever you like to do whatever you like.

If I was OPs boss I would be looking at getting rid. Poor attitude.

Perhaps there's a round of cuts coming? One of your headcount has to go - it's either a case of you crosstrain to a broader skill base or one of your team gets training in your role and it's you who goes...

Personally I'd bite the bullet and take the training ;-)

I haven't dismissed anything and I am grateful for the advice. Initially when I first asked for advice I didn't have to act on it and the problem went away but it has since resurfaced.

Hence me forgetting I had put it on.

This could be a sign your bosses are not happy with your skill set or the way you are running things.

Is this an addhoc change or a significant project.

Who has put together the requirements that needs this particular work doing it should be speced out and costed as being done by current people or if significant work maybe contracted out.

This is not about contracts and demarkation it's about being proffessional and getting the jobs done.

I suspect there is more than just this issue otherwise you would be talking about it to the boss.

It might have been a good idea last time to have addressed the issue even though you thought it had gone away to get a clear indication of expectations and who the service would be delivered.

OP when exactly did you start working for this employer? If you started after 5th April 2012, your job is potentially very precarious indeed, and this may influence how you respond to the situation.
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

What is the significance of the 5th April 2012? Was there a change in employment law or is to do with 12 months in a job and whether you can be let go etc?

It is my responsibility to manage the projects and ensure that throughout any given project that targets are met and it suits the business needs.

I am not permitted to sub contract any work unless it involves plumbing, electrical or building work.

I have to utilise the skills of the staff I have.
