If i were your boss, i'd be asking why you think it would be ok to delegate a job you are not willing to do yourself?. How can you possibly expect someone else to do it if your not willing to ?
It doesn't work like that, what you say sounds nice but really doesn't make sense in highly structured organisations.
It will vary from industry to industry and workplace culture to workplace culture but generally when you have high skilled employees (esp where your team has a wide variety of skills) it makes zero sense for the manager to do the employee's job, unless there is really is no other option.
Its like using a rock to hammer nails when a hammer or a nail gun would preferable.
Plus from a pure monetary perspective, I would have to pay more to use that rock, to do a worse job.
As for what do to, it depends too much on what the workplace culture is like.
Personally badaz52 from what you've written I think you're taking it slightly the wrong way, I would probably question your boss why he thinks this is a good idea.
Alternatively generally as long the work gets done nobody really looks too hard how it gets done, so you could just ignore it.0 -
This has come up before, almost exectly the same senario.0

And what was the solution, what do you mean?0 -
I honestly don't get what the problem is.
If A asks his immediate subordinate to personally do a job then why does the subordinate think he should delegate the job ?
If I was the manager and I personally asked my subordinate to do a job then he kicked up a fuss ( whether that be refusing to do it or questioning my decision/request) because he thought he should be allowed to delegate the job then I would take a dim view of that.
Sounds more and more like an ego thing to me.2014 Target;

I knew this was familiar I though it might have been another forum but could not find it there so tried a search here.0 -
So 10 months ago you worked in a school and were expected to do the cabling, left there and got a new job where they expect you to do the same.
Let me guess, a career in IT, "I'll just be sitting tapping away at a keyboard, no physical effort required".
Seems that it is normal for it to be part of the job, get used to it or change careers.0 -
You are right although I don't actually remember putting it on!0

I can see you have a negative opinion about those who work in IT as sitting behind a desk doing nothing all day. I can assure you there is plenty of physical effort required and I do my fair share of the physical work that is required. I think most that have responded to my thread have missed my point which is why give a manager a task to do and then not allow them to delegate this task if they wish. As someone else said surely the end result is more important and that the job was completed and to a high standard, who completes the task is surely irrelevant and if it was so important for me to have all the skills required to do the entire job why give me a team of technicians????0 -

Thanks for all the good advice which I am immediately going to dismiss... Have you been reading how to win friends again?:rotfl:Life is like a box of chocolates - drop it and the soft centres splash everywhere0 -
I haven't dismissed anything and I am grateful for the advice. Initially when I first asked for advice I didn't have to act on it and the problem went away but it has since resurfaced.
Hence me forgetting I had put it on.0
