Cat scratches the floor around food dish

  • They have scent glands in their paws. One of mine scratches/rubs his paws round his bowl if he's finished eating and there's food left. He's scent marking to tell my other cat it's his. My other cat ignores this entirely though. Ha ha. Maybe there's a new cat moved into your neighbourhood and your cat is worried about it so is marking his food as his.

My cats don't have a water bowl, but two plastic tumblers. One in the lounge and one at the other end of the kitchen from their food. The lounge one is the most popular. Cats really don't like drinking beside their food.

My cats also don't drink water from a bowl near their food . One (15 yrs) has just started to drink in the mornings from my bedside glass of water . I don't see the other two drinking any water at all . Anyone have any idea why they don't drink beside their food bowls ?

One of mine, George does it with water. I got 2 water dishes for them, on opposite sides of the wall.

Each time I change the water for fresh, George puts his paw in a dish and moves it off the mat, spilling the water everywhere. Then h does it with the other bowlllll grrrr
  • My Male cat has always done this since we got him in 2007, along with his deceased brother, and yes he is now 7 too! He does it around the dry bowl and the wet bowl. He has the option of water bowls by both and will drink from either or he goes outside and finds a source. It is just him doing his cat thing. Just territorial marking that is all. He likes gourmet tins and is now our one and only since our 18 year old gal had to be put to sleep in January. And it has to be the gravy ones. But even 85g seems too much sometimes.
  • Thanks to everyone for the wisdom......I see where you're coming from. There are "foreign cats" that come and go outdoors and generally he's out there protecting his territory when he's not crashed out saving energy.....maybe these cats are coming in to the stairway of the apartment block and this is what is annoying him.

I will experiment with putting his food down, sometimes I have to say he is a little wasteful......licks the juice or jelly off the food and goes back to sleep.

For the water its beside the food and if necessary thats where he seems to drink from...maybe worth just relocating it to see......just so he gets a reasonable amount of intake
