Skim plaster worth it?

Hello,
I will be putting my shared ownership flat on the market in the next few months. My question is.... the walls in the bedrooms look quite tatty, even with heavy paper being hung professionally. I could paint them but the joins of the wallpaper show in places and it just doesn't look fantastic. In this situation, would anyone else bother paying up to £1000 to have both rooms plastered (skimmed)? Or just paint the walls and hope for the best?
I am torn as we don't want to waste money, and we hardly noticed when we moved in but I don't feel right presenting a flat looking less than great.
Thanks for any advice.

I'd be inclined to say that a shared ownership flat is obviously going to sell to someone on a fairly limited budget, so it's probably not worth spending too much money getting everything perfect. Skimming is quite a lot of mess and disruption as well.
Are you going to be redecorating anyway? If you're prepared to spend a lot of time being really fussy about it, you can do an awful lot just with filler and sandpaper.0 -
Personally I'd just freshen it up with a coat of paint. You aren't going to recoup any monies spent out on expensive skimming & redecoration so don't even consider it.
No viewer is likely to examine the walls close up & will just notice if it looks fresh & clean, which is what will appeal to prospective purchasers. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
I would NOT try polystyrene, but you could try a layer of lining paper going horizontally, with another layer on top going vertically. That covers an awful lot of sins and provides a great finish if well done. It's a lot of work, and I agree with cattie - just fill the worst gaps between the paper and paint with a nice clean neutral finish. It'll look good enough. For some reason, I find that dark colours show up the imperfections more, but YMMV.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Not seen YMMV before. Googled and got 'your mileage may vary' and 'you make me vomit'. I take it you mean neither of those GBD222!!It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

Thanks everyone. Our shared ownership flats are in an expensive area and the only people who can afford them anymore are IT professionals, downsizing retirees, dual earners so that is why I'm a bit worried. Maybe if we get viewers commenting, then would be the time to worry about it. Thank youDebts 2004: £6000..............................................Aug 2007: £0!!!!0

I would if it is poor, your potential buyer will likely not be able to afford to do it, they could up and buy a flat in better shape. The disruption in a small property is offputting.
Or have the paper done properly, you should not be able to see the joins with a professional job.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

I meant that your mileage may vary, ie you may have a different view on paint. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
