Tax rebate while on JSA?

Just wondered if I have the right info on this.

I was on BR tax code for the entire time i was in my last job, i paid £1500 tax on £7500 wages over the 5 months.

I was made redundant in Jan, and am currently claiming JSA - is it correct that the DWP will be the ones to do my tax rebate, or can i go to the tax office?

  • DWP can make tax refunds but if you were on code BR this would have needed the tax office to have sent a tax code to the benefits office with details of the correct code and your earnings/tax paid from your previous job(s) earlier in the year.

If this hasn't happened you will need to claim from HMRC but you will need to send them your P60 certificate from DWP - this shows how much job seekers allowance you received to 05:04:2013 along with how much, if any, tax was repaid.

I think it is actually the Jobcentre that would deal with it in the first case. They will refund any tax due back at some point after the tax year end (no idea how long it takes, sorry) but only if they have your full details. If they do not have full details of tax code, taxable income (from employment and benefit) and tax paid they will not be able to process the refund. If that is the case you will see from your P60 that they issue and you will then need to contact HMRC about it.

did you get a P45? ask JCP, or send direct to tax office, advising on JSA dates etc, so they can set right code, calculate any rebate..

What a load of tosh, OP said they are currently claiming JSA so unless HMRC and DWP have invested in a time machine issuing a tax code now will not help in any way to sort a tax refund for the last tax year which ended yesterday!

Correct, all you will need to do is send a brief letter explaining your employment details for the 12:13 tax year - what you were doing before the 5 moth job - to the tax office along with your P60 from DWP.
