I called up today to close my onecard down, the apr is around 18% and goes unused. They then said we will lower your intrest to 12.9......then he said do you have a reward current account sayd yes....

instantly he offered the Halifax clarity reward account as an upgrade.

Goes to show you how they take advantage
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

What, you didn't use a card and, when you decided to close it, they checked your eligibility for a rewarding credit card and that's how they "take advantage"?

Or have I completely misunderstood your complaint? Or was that praise for their offering you a good deal - something which is likely to have been offered to you every time you logged in and reviewed what accounts you had.

not really a complaint, just that they could of offered a lower apr in the first place

    What a ridiculous comment.

You hadn't proven yourself to be a good customer when they offered the first one.

They never pro-actively offer a lower APR for being a good customer. I've been with them for years, and they constantly increased my credit limit as I'm such a "good customer". When I asked for a lower APR instead, they said no. Didn't really bother me as always pay off in full, and I now use the reward Clarity card for cheap foreign use and £5/month reward - that's hard to beat.

It's like bonus interest rates, insurance renewals and utility tariffs - they hope you just carry on without question, but will give you a better rate with no argument if you threaten to leave. It's taking advantage of inertia, and is ethically a bit dubious.
  • I'm confused - clarity reward...? I've got a clarity card which I use abroad and a reward card, which gives me the £5 monthly reward, but is there a combo of the two? Would be loads better for me to just have one card, instead of two, but I've never heard of the "Clarity Reward Card"?
I don't think I can hang on til Friday...

The Clarity Reward card is the same as the Clarity card. You get the £5 if you spend more than £300 per month, and have a Halifax current account, that you pay £1000 or more into each month. Im not aware of a separate Rewards card.

Just to clarify, in order to get the £5 reward with the credit card you also need to have a Halifax Current Account? I wanted to close my Halifax Account, but I may not anymore if that's the case.

That's odd... I have a clarity card that doesn't give me the £5 monthly payment, I wonder if my reward card gives me the same benefits abroad, so that I can scrap that one...

Yes, you do, and pay £1000 through it each month.
