I read a worrying article about someone who used images on their website from Google and got a bill in the post for £950 for 'unpaid licence fees!

People on here who build websites, where do you get your images? Do you use stocks of images declared free or pay royalty fees generally? Can anyone recommend safe sites to go to for clipart, photos etc which won't land us unexpected bills or court cases!?

I use http://www.istockphoto.com/
But there are plenty of libraries around0 -
Getty is the other well known one.
Really the only way to be sure is to make it yourself or licence it properly.
You can check the EXIF data for copyright info if you're really worried however, lack of copyright info does not mean its free to use.
If you run a non-commercial website, looking for images under the creative commons licence is probably the best way forward.0 -
http://www.sxc.hu and http://morguefile.com have some free ones, just look at the usage terms before using them.
http://www.istockphoto.com & http://www.dreamstime.com are paid ones but have some much better images.0 -
I rarely use images in my OWN website, and those that I do I have made myself or contracted others to make for me.
In my CLIENT websites then they provide all images and are responsible for the copyright clearance/licensing of them.0 -

Ideally you want your clients to supply their own images, but sometimes you need to pick a few up for them or at least as relevant placeholders.0 -
i've contributed to http://www.sxc.hu/ and istockphoto.com .. i've had requests for years for the few images I've had up there.
When i use to do my own web-development, i would usually look there for images and stock-art0
