Salary Negotiation

Obvious question but how does it work?

Do you say you want £XXX amount or do you say between £XXX and £XXX.
Bad luck breeds bad luck.

Damn I'm doomed.

In a job you already have or one you have or going to be interviewed for?

    Interview for a new job.

Every job I have ever had the salary has been advertised, however this one is not and the recruitment agent says that if I get asked I should say what my minimum would be.

LOL The agency SHOULD know the salary and if they do not they are not doing a good job at all

I would NEVER say at 1st interview what you are after or tell them what you are on.

If they ask then say it's negotiable when an offer is on the table.

Surely the agency have put you 'over' to the job with a salary range marked down? How are they working with the company if they have no idea what they are paying?

If not they may be wasting your time? What if its a NMW job?

Sorry didnt give much information in my posts.

The agency has said the salary scale £25-30k and they said I should say a minimum of £27k.

Currently I am on £25k well £24.5k ish

This is going to be my third interview so chances are it will come up.

Although £27k would be fine I obviously want to get as high as possible and think £28.5k is more reasonable for my experience.

Oh right well if you had only said

If it was 25-30 never say 30 aim for mid way and say in the range of 27-28 (I would) and whatever they offer if they do give you the job you can negotiate.

They probably will not ask if they have not by now and this is now the 3rd interview

They do not need to know what you are earning now.

    Good luck

    Good luck

But then you can't negotiate up.

What I do is to say 'my current job pays X and with the benefits I get I would need Y before I considered a move. I usually add 20% onto X to make Y. Then they can only negotiate down.

So for £24.5k I'd be saying I need £29.4k before I considered moving. Then if they do want to negotiate you down they can offer increased days leave, or some other benefits to make up for the difference.

You could say a minimum start depending on benefits etc

20%? Wow - never considered 20% at all for a move.

Well to be honest with no job now I am no position to negotiate anything at all.

If they don't advertise the salary then you have to make it worth your while - to be honest I don't apply for jobs without a salary, I would usually ring and before applying and if it was an agency, I'd ask at the first interview what were their salary expectations and if it was lower than I would be willing to go, I'd probably say 'well, I don't want to waste either of out time, but that salary is not enough for me to consider a move so thanks but shall we leave it there?'.

There is no point in saying a minimum start - as they will only ever negotiate down. So you will only ever get less than your minimum. the 20% means that they can negotiate you down to say 10%. And you are still getting an increase with that.

Having said that - I once said 'the very least I would be willing to move jobs for would be £40k' and they offered £50k there and then. I was at the time on £33k. Which was a nice move!

If you are moving jobs maybe but still even a £500 increase is more than most would get in a year pay increase.

I apply (as I have no job) for jobs with no salary advertised but obviously the OP is in a job so can do what they like and turn jobs down. I know I aim too low and that's why I do not get most of the interviews I could get if they were more senior roles.

    Thanks for the comments.

I do know I m lucky to be in a job and that and increase is an increase.

I just want to give myself the best chance of the highest amount possible.

Hopefully if/when the subject of salary comes up they give me a figure first and then I know where to lever from.
