HP always maintains you should use its own ink cartridges else your printer will explode.
Is this actually true? Does anyone have experience of putting non-HP, i.e. far cheaper, replacement cartridges in an HP printer?
TIA.

Yes I have.
Using HP 363 generic cartridges in my C6280, with no problems.
The seller I used has disappeared but they were similar to these

Used to put compatibles into my PSC2210 all the time - with no ill effects (ink cartridges 56, 57 & photo58). They may not always correctly report as full/empty but meh, at the price difference who cares?0

Conversely we used some cartridges from a refilling firm which gummed up our large and expensive A3 HP OfficeJet K850DN inkjet printer so completely that we had to get a new printer...
For cheap printers, you can usually get a new one for not much more than the price of a set of original manufacturer's cartridges!0
