Halifax reward claim back tax

Options
My wife is currently a non tax payer and she has 2 sole reward accounts and 1 joint account with me.
We was wondering how does she go about applying back for the tax paid on these accounts for period apr 12 to apr 13
And how much is she likely to get back?

  • she needs to complete an R85 form in the branch, not sure how much she will get back...
    Save £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000
    Save £12k in 2013 no.34 £11,800/£12,000
'How much can you save' thread = £7,050
    Total=£29,100
    Mfi3 no. 88: Balance Jan '06 = £63,000.
    Balance 23.11.09 = £nil. :)

As far as I know, the Reward curret accounts are ones where the R85 isn't accepted and it is always necessary to reclaim via HMRC.

You have to claim it back using an R40 form. It counts as taxed income (it's not technically "interest"), so you include it in section 2 rather than section 3. Each £5 net reward should've been £6.25 gross reward so you'll get £1.25 x 12 = £15 if you had it for the entire year.

I was asked for proof of income etc. so I had to send them print outs of the bank statements. I don't think you can do this unless they ask for it though.

The April 2012 payment was in tax year 2011-12, the others have been in 2012-13.

Unless these payments would bring her over the personal allowance and as long as the Reward was earned for each account every month, she would get back £1.25 x 2.5 per month, so £40.62 or thereabouts.

She doesn't work and the halifax accounts are just her spare accounts, which bank statements does she need to send. The Halifax ones or her main account one with first direct?

Also has some please got a link to down this R40 form.
    Thanks

No - it needs a signature so must be posted.

There's also an R40 guide that will explain what sections are relevant to your situation.

The R40 is essentially a simple tax return - you have to complete every section that is relevant for the tax year the claim is for.
