Keep on at them! They try this sometimes, but if you don't give up they will eventually give you your money back

Have you (or they) got confused here?

Their T&Cs state that credit or non-UK cards attract a fee. You're using neither of them.

It's quite uncommon to pay charges for paying via debit card - though by no means unheard of.

the travel company has come back to me and said that they are not surcharging me but when they put my "visa debit card" thru their pdq(?) machine it registered as a credit card and they think that barclays will charge them .
they say that they will query this with the bank and i suggested that they do this pretty quickly as their terms and conditions do not allow them to pass this charge onto uk visa debit card holders...of which there must be a lot, so i can't understand why they've only just noticed this:)
they've suggested that the balance could be paid into their bank and i suggested that they should amend their terms and conditions to allow this facility to everyone:rotfl::rotfl:
good job i'm retired..i'd have had to bill them quite a lot of money for this advice!

No-one seems to have told direct.gov.uk or DVLA about the new limits!

Just paid for my tax disc online which cost £20, but a £2.50 surcharge for paying by credit card.

Reported it to the Which campaign.

Big chain stores don't charge because they are making ridiculous profits anyway, so they can afford to. Plus they are probably making sufficient transactions to get the fees down to 1% or less. If you order online, no additional charges are usually made. In fact, for some stores, online prices are cheaper than the high street price.

Smaller stores I can understand charging 2.5% as this is what they'll be charged by their payment processor (plus probably a monthly fee).

Our local news agent charged 50p for paying with a debit card or £2.50 for paying with a credit card. I think the later was a little high, this morning I see a new sign has been erected - "Please note, we do not take credit cards, only debit cards".

The newsagent in Brixton tube station charges a 60p surcharge for card usage.

I only wanted to top up £1.40! So I just topped up £5 using a ticket machine instead!
  • As far as I can see, the rules that were brought in last year have had no impact on credit card surcharges. There are still "rip off" fees on buying tickets and Virgin charge 2.6% on using an Amex to pay for their holidays!

If you want to use a card that expensive to process then pay for it. Why should I pay more so a few can have their wangs made to look bigger because they have an AMEX

But they only charge 1.5% for Visa/Mastercard Credit, and 0% for Debit Cards or cheques.

Which sounds very much like they are just passing on the costs of each payment method. So the rules are working, the retailer is passing on to the customer using the higher-cost payment method the extra costs, whilst also offering other perfectly fair, common payment options for free.
  • I recently bought a TV & Sound bar from curry on a buy now pay in 6 months, £1000
Now I want to pay it off in full they want to charge me to use my bank card £3 or if i use a credit card 4% of the total, surly this is just a total rip off by Curry's ?
I was never told this in the shop when I went to purchase the said items.
ALSO I have to pay the £25 settlement fee that's £65 on top of my £1000.
I think it`s disgusting the way these company's hide their charges we are just ripped off at every opportunity.
Watch out for creation finance through Curry`s, PC world, DSG
BUY NOW PAY LATER WITH HIDDEN CHARGES

So you really think that these deals are free do you?
You have been taught a money saving lesson here - if you do not pay upfront use a credit card preferably one with a free purchases offer.
The £25 fee + £3 card fee equates to approx. 5.6% annual interest rate.
Nobody can ''MAGIC'' up free money everybody pays in one way or another.
NB It is not a rip off - to some people it is useful to readers of these boards who know their way around it is not.
Up to you to decide what is best for you.

I just got charged 2% for buying car insurance using a credit card which was fine but I cancelled the policy a few hours later and they refunded but kept the 2% charge. They wrote to me telling me they had refunded me but the letter said the difference was due to the hours of cover they had given me between starting the policy and cencellling it a few hours later despite the policy not starting for two weeks. I rang them and they told me my credit card company had taken the money, I rang the credit card company and they of course said they didnt take it from me and any fee to them is also refunde when the transaction is cancelled. Is this theft?
