Payment made to a closed bank account, help!

Hi all,
Not sure if this is the right forum but I need help ASAP. Stupidly I made a payment from my Paypal account to a closed Halifax bank account. I have been told so many things my head is spinning! I was told the payment would bounce back then I was told it may be in a holding account with the bank, I was given an FPID number to trace the payment to which the bank cannot trace. The bank have now told me the money will have been returned to paypal and they should be able to trace the money as it will be somewhere with them. I've done nothing but phone both places for days and I'm just getting put from pillar to post. Help! I know I'm to blame for being stupid enough to make the mistake in the first place but surely It shouldn't be at the cost of my money. Any assistance would be appreciated

It will be in a suspense account at Halifax, if phone calls aren't getting you anywhere then send a written letter to them giving the tracking codes.0
