Income tax !!!! up.

Has anyone else had a letter from HM revenue and customs. This morning my OH received 3 letters one was dated 24th January telling him his tax code for April2013/April2014 will be 925L (its got a medical insurance on there of £189),which by the way he doesn't have.
The second letter is dated 17th March telling him that on his private pension his tax code is 91T(meaning he has a tax allowance of £916.....this has got to be wrong because he doesn't have an allowance on this pension as he uses his allowance on his wages....
Which brings me to the 3rd letter which states On his wages his tax code for 2012/2013 is 700L which replaces 797L which they have broke down like this,
personal allowance £8105
other earnings £916
medical Insurance £189
tax free amount £7000.

Tried ringing today but it was an automated message saying computers were down,be back on Tuesday but they expect a lot of calls.......
Has anyone else had any letters. This is the 1st year ever he has had a problem..

Its not just you...Hmrc notorious for getting codings wrong, all you can do is tell them what is correct and hopefully they will get it right
  • It should be fixable over the phone, we have in the past corrected such things this way but now is not a great time to try and contact them, unfortunately.

From the information you've provided about his tax code for 2012/13 ie
    personal allowance £8105
    other earnings £916
    medical Insurance £189
    tax free amount £7000

Your husband has had some tax allowance used for his pension previously.

I would think the new codes are simply the same breakdown but based on the new personal allowances from 6th April 2013.

When is your husband's year of birth?

It looks like HMRC think he was born between 6 April 1938 and 5 April 1948 therefore using the personal allowance of £10,500 not the £9,440 for under 65's.

    personal allowance £10500
    other earnings £916
    medical Insurance £189
tax free amount £9395 probably a code of 939L

His code is 925L so could be an adjustment for the number of days in the year he is or isn't over 65

    PPI Success :- Egg Card - £ 8471.84 ~ HFC Loan - £ 8312.67 ~ Halifax Loan - £ 334.67 :D
    DFD ~ Jan 2019  Christmas 2014 fund ~ £ 150 / £ 500

Alternatively the code for 13:14 may simply be
    personal allowance 9440
    less medical insurance 189
tax free amount 9251 = code of 925L

dazed and confused....His allowance should be 9440 for 13/14,but they have taken off 189 for medical insurance, which he doesn't have,so that will need adjusting...
As for the 12/13 code,he has never had an allowance on his private pension, it has always been on his earnings, and always paid full 20% income tax on his private pension, and that is what has thrown me a bit..he is not of pensionable age yet,but has a private pension..Will ring again next week to get the medical insurance sorted and hopefully get it rebated for last year..

God knows how the HMRC will cope with all the changes.

    Thanks for the replies..
