I live in Stoke - if you're asking this question because of all the bad rap that Stoke seems to be getting at the moment, then I wouldn't believe all you hear. The people are some of the nicest in the country, but I admit I don't really want to be in Stoke forever as it feels like an area of the country that the 'powers that be' seem to forget about.

There are things wrong with Stoke - knocking things down and leaving the rubble for years on end being one of them lol - but then there are bad sides to other places too.

Which bit of Stoke are you looking at? There are actually some nice areas round here ;)

EDIT: I rent a house which is probably worth about £50k, given that the landlord hasn't really done much with it. I pay £325 a month. Houses round my area that are about £80k would probably see you get about £450-£500 depending on whether you invest in doing them up. It does depend on the area you choose though - there are some nice ones in Stoke ;)

Ive owned property in Manchester. You get the good and the bad with renting, its part of the territory.

Having been through stoke (albeit on the motorway), it did seem like a forgotten town. You will probably get a relatively decent yield though.

Personally, i wouldnt want to rent property out that wasnt within a short distance of where i lived - i would feel like id be losing that little bit of control where i could go and check up on the property if/when i was going passed.

If you look around Shelton, ST4, there is a massive student rental market near SOT College. The prices are still reasonable and the rental incomes decent.

Being a Stokie myself i have to say like the rest... You get the good with the bad, wherever you go.

Like mentioned above, There is a massive section of "Shelton" terraced houses which you could buy to let due to having Stoke University literally a 5 minute walk away and also the train station being 10 minutes. Shelton is not exactly a pretty place (no offense to anybody from that area) however it is extremely popular with Students who are always looking for a room / place to rent.

If thats not up your street you could buy a lovely house to let in "Trentham, Blythe Bridge, Newcastle" these are all pretty popular areas people look in.

I have just gone into renting, i rent in Trentham area, which is nice. There is money to be made it took me and OH ages to find a property that wasnt already busy with views.

I would say if you didnt go into buy to let for students, maybe steer away from buying a terrace as there is so many on the market and have been for some time. It seems they dont do very well.
Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.
