Flour - self raising - which to buy

Hi

I am sat here doing my tesco's on line order - trying to do the order and meal plan without getting distracted by MSE, but I have a quick question on flour.

I have just looked at the prices of self raising flour and the difference between a branded flour, tescos and tesco value is huge.

I cook lots of cakes - helped by toddlers, so am not a precise cook, white sauces, and a bit of pastry. We use strong flour of bread

Thanks

Hels

I use branded flour. Maybe I'm just a flour snob, but Mum used tesco's own both SR and Plain and her cakes and pastry taste great.

I prefer their value flour to their normal own brand. I use it for all cakes and pastry. Bit of a flour snob when it comes to bread flour though. It has to be branded.

I'm by no means an expert baker but I find Tesco Value SR is pretty good.

Quite agree, value flour is usually just as good as the branded stuff, but sometimes I feel I have to sift it twice. However, I never see the point of buying SR flour. I always buy plain and add baking powder if the recips calls for SR - one flour two jobs, saves on space too ;)

The great goddess Delia herself once said on t.v. that there is little difference between the cheaper and more expensive flours. The only difference is that you should sift the cheap flour twice as it is often packaged more tightly and was not sifted as much in the production process. Having said that I only ever sift once and it is fine!

Value or basic is fine for both SR and All Purpose flour. Only poor cooks insist you need to pay top dollar for flour to get good results IMO:p ;):D
