Hi there,

I wonder if anyone could provide me with some information please.

I have just been told by Eon after being with them for 5 years that my meter is a hct meter, meaning I have a day and night rate. I previously had storage heaters in my property but I got rid of those hideous things a while ago.

Eon have now informed me I am moving onto their standard energy plan at the end of the month, which will add on a fair whack to my bills I presume. They have told me as I have a hct meter there is no other alternative to this tariff.

When I have been doing online comparisons they have been asking what percentage I use at day/night but these are not on my bills? I have 2 rates on my meter the first is over double the second, I presume these are the day/night rates but don't know. I rather foolishly didn't even realise I had such a meter!

What I am now looking to do is find out more about my meter and what it means as well as looking at a long term alternative to eons standard tariff.

The rates are 15.57 and 7.7 for day and night respectively. I am not looking for a short term fix till next year which might save me money only long term fix. I was also wondering if there is anywhere to hand where I could all energy suppliers standard rates for a hct meter.

Apologies for the muddled outlook here I am still trying to get my head round what all this means.

Ps is an economy 7 meter also the same as an hct meter?

As Eon have explained you have no alternatives, don't worry about it ;)

If it was an E7 meter, you would have alternatives.

I suggest you call the supplier if you have any further questions :)

    Hi widget

The prices you mention are very similar to our Economy 7 rates for area 18 in Scotland.

If your meter is Economy 7 then there are various tariffs available, both with us and the other suppliers.

However, if it's what's known as a Restricted Hour Tariff (RHT) meter, we only have the one tariff available.

RHT meters are often used in all electric properties with storage heaters. They give cheaper off peak electricity at certain times during every 24 hour period for things like storage heaters and under floor heating.

Best to identify the exact type of meter. You can call us or, alternatively, drop an email to the address in my Profile if you prefer. Will be happy to let you know.

I would advise you to phone the company whose names are on your meter rather than your provider. They should be able to help you out as to which it is set at eg. Economy 7 or restricted hour tariff without trying to sell you anything.

Just out of curiosity Malc, what tariff does EON offer for RHT as I have just a conversation with yourselves and have been given very contradicting information

    Thanks

You need to get onto a single rate tariff. ASAP. It appears you are using nothing on the cheap night rate (are all your units charged at the 15.57p rate?), but you are still paying a substantial premium on the day rate, and this is 100% of your consumption.
You should have had the meter changed when you ditched your NSH's.

  • the vast majority of people I see, who have eco 7 meters have no idea why they have the meter. night storage heaters are long gone in their propertys to be replaced by gas central heating. take Macmans advice and change the meter to a single rate. The Government have recently ordered the suppliers to give consumers the lowest tariffs. Getting people off outdated eco 7 meters should be included in that advice

Sorry for the contradictory information Scrimper13. I've just posted a response on the other thread you posted on as per the link below.
