I really want to be debt free, really really do. Plus as I could save more than 300 based on my salary and OH's contribution, I could also get my driving test done again so it would be a real bonus.
Would also depend on other places (e.g. parents) where you are welcome for dinner every now and again...
Parents are 300 miles away, no option of that sadly.
Bathroom water often comes from a cold water tank (which is warmer than mains water, so more efficient to mix with hot water to run a bath) which has been sitting around in the tank for some time. And so not ideal to drink.
Ah yes I've heard of this, of course. Never occurred to me when drinking out of said tap though0 -
I would, especially with it being a means to an end, debt-wise - we've also done lots of refurbs and have got quite used to *roughing it*
One project house actually had four *kitchens*when we bought it, but all were pretty unusable - we made do with a mini cooker, washed up in a basin and the first Christmas ate our dinner in the hall! DS (8 at the time) thought it was great fun :rotfl:
Our current house had no kitchen when we bought it in 2011 and we then spent most of last summer (I use the term 'summer' loosely, LOL!) without hot water, central heating and only the bare minimum of electrical sockets whilst we built an extension to house the new kitchen, although we did plumb in a temporary sink unit (intended for the new utility room) so we had somewhere to wash up, albeit with boiled water.
For a while we did all our cooking in either the microwave, on top of the multi-fuel stove or on the BBQ - again, weather permitting!
If you're inventive with your cooking and not likely to fall prey to tempting but expensive ready meals, the pain will surely be worth the gain.......Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

DH once had cause to look in the water tank in a friend's attic and found dead bats - apparently our friends (and their kids) had been merrily drinking water from the bathroom taps oblivious to this
I have to confess since then I've only ever drunk (cheap) bottled water!Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

So, list of things that I need to ask when viewing...
1. Council tax situation
2. Is heating linked to shop or do I control it?
3. Where are gas and elec meters?
4. How many sockets, do all of them work, and what is the max load on the main power circuit?
5. Where does the water supply come from ie tank or mains?
Anything else that I've missed?
Thanks for all this, lots of stuff I wouldn't have though of!0 -

I've found a super cheap place to rent above a shop, right by my new (hopefully) place of work, but here's the catch...
It doesn't have a kitchen....
It has been tenanted for a while, and the agent (while being quite honest and saying that they wouldn't do it) says that the tenant has a stand alone small cooker and goes to laundrette for washing. They do dishes in the bathroom.
It is half the price of other rental in the area, which would help me out significantly, I would be out of debt super quick and able to save so then enabling me to move on to another property after a while.
Question is - is this dodgy? I can't help but think that it's office space turned into a 'flat' or suchlike and without permission or...
Second - would you do it, have no real kitchen? I love my slow cooker and am quite versatile when it comes to cooking but would it become hell after a while? The savings really do appeal...
Opinions or advice welcome, viewing it on Tues...
Doesn't even sound like this 'space' classed as habitable so not legal to let to residential tenants. Speak to Environmental Health at the local council. Is it registered for council tax? Have you checked with Planning if it is registered as residential or commercial? If it's not been properly converted is it even safe to live in, fire protection and access? Is buildings/ landlords/ contents insurance valid if it's not a habitable space? Why would you want to let from a landlord who doesn't even supply a basic kitchenette? And why via an agent who would be involved in something potentially dodgy?
Don't seek verbal assurances, they are not worth the paper they are written on.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Interestingly, they cancelled my viewing, less than 3 hours before I was due to see it.
Glad I didn't go tbh.0
