support for masters

Hi - does anyone know if there are any grants I cold apply for to help out whilst I'm studing for my masters in reserach. I've been lucky enough to have been given a scholarship which will pay my fees but finances aren't great at the moment.

I'm registered disabled so haven't been able to work and my husband is currently unemployed and suffering from severe depression so any help would be gratefully received,
Thanks xx

First of all, it seems that you are eligible for DSA even though you're a postgrad student so here's a link to further info on that: http://www.prospects.ac.uk/funding_postgraduate_study_disability_related_funding.htm

A good starting point for general grants is here http://www.turn2us.org.uk/grants_search/advanced.aspx although bear in mind that you'll have to sift through a lot of search results.

Also, most trusts and charities would only give you a few hundred £s if you're lucky so will need to apply to quite a few places.

Also, it's worthwhile looking at the funding pages of unis in the same part of the country you live in as a lot of bursaries etc that you may be eligible for would be listed on university funding pages.

Some other places to look are:
    http://www.scholarship-search.org.uk/
The Grants Register 2013 - you can find this in your local library

Another option is a Career Development Loan which could help you.

    Hope this helps :)

thanks for the links - I'll start trawling through tomorrow!

I receive DLA but my husband receives ESA as he's unemployed at the moment.

    Thanks for the help :):)

Will your current benefits be stopping? Do you claim council tax benefit and housing benefit? If you will be a full time student you will not have to pay council tax.

  • It's tough times for all with regards to postgrad funding. Definately look into council tax benefit - you will get a reduction if your husband is off work and as you are a student.

Hi - once again thanks for the advice.

We are in receipt of council tax benefit but now have to pay a percentage towards the bill as a result of the benefits shake up, and as we have a mortgage we receive very little housing benefit, just enough to cover a percentage of the interest.

We've spoke to a benefits advisor and nothing else will be affected with me going back to uni. xx
