Start by booting with a Linux Live CD, ask a friend to download a version for you and put it on a disk, it will allow you view the HDD, file structure and data without making any alterations, it is a good place to start.

If your data is there you may be able to burn it onto CD's from the Linux Live system.

Remember that you can NEVER remove data from a hard disk, even when it is overwritten the data is still there, overwritten data on 'blank' areas of the disk are in an area known as freespace, getting hold of the data is the problem.

If you go down the route of paying for data recovery ensure they make a copy of your disk, give it back and work on that copy.

A torrent to get a Linux Live CD is here, I'd ask a techie friend for help, I'm sure there's one at Uni.

well thanks to everyone who posted in this thread to give their technical advice
I managed to recover most of my files and pictures by using the getdataback.
It worked faster (2 hours aprox) intalling the HDD as a second drive on another PC.:j
I saved £££ by recovering myself. I bought off ebay long ago a CD with several softwares and getdataback (old version) was included so save more money...
I already have my files and pictures in another HDD. looking to have them burn in DVD now.

he done the right thing connecting the drive to another computer. another option is to reinstall windows on top of the old one, when done it will allow you to look at the stuff on the OLD windows installation such as my documents etc.

Its worked for me numerous times.
