Is there any way of separating search plugins into separate categories, so they don't all appear in a single drop-down list?

I'd like to have separate categories for general web search (eg Google, Yahoo, Gigablast), news search (eg Google News, Feedster), foreign language synonym dictionaries (eg woerterbuch.info, dico.isc.cnrs.fr) etc. Now that I've figured out how to make my own search plugins, my search engine list has become very large, and it takes too long to scroll through the whole list to find an individual search engine.

Thanks in advance.

This is great for managing plugins:
    here

When you've moved the plugins around you click 'Sort Search Plugins' to save changes. (which is a confusing button if you ask me)

You can also access the plugin's code quickly by right-clicking them

Unfortunately, It doesn't do anything to help you catagorize them

It's not a firefox plugin - It's a mini stand-alone prog that direcly manipulates the plugin folder (so you have to restart ff to see any changes)

I've just read somewhere that apparently, plugins are listed in order of filename - so you can change the filename without changing the name of the plugin itself.

Apparently, it's also possible to put plugins in subdirectories of the plugin folder, and Mozilla will find them. It will list them in order of folder name first, and then in order of filename.

So you could create folders called 01, 02, 03, 04 etc - and the plugins in the 01 folder will be listed first, followed by the plugins in 02 folder, and so on.

Okay so it's not quite as good as having them displayed in categories - but it's almost as good. You could call the folders "01web" "02images" "03dictionaries" and use Windows Explorer (or its equivalent on whatever OS you're using) to move plugins around the list.

I've not actually tried this yet.

FWIW - I have tried it now - and it didn't work. :( Oh well. Thanks for the link, will try that next. :)
