ACM wrapper Codec Advice Required

The problem: When I have ACM wrapper enabled my computer won't hibernate.
I am on Windows XP SP3
Having looked on the internet I see the ACM wrapper is a codec Directshow.

History
All was well except every time I opened Windows Live Photo Gallery I got a message saying some files could not be displayed because some codec were missing and an invite to download the missing codec. Several times I followed the download link but came to a dead end.
I then searched the web and found a site with free codec downloads and downloaded them checked for viruses none and installed them and Windows Live Photo Gallery ran all files O.K.
I then found that when I opened a folder in windows explorer with .avi files in it I got a message saying something like "Windows explorer has to close because all .avi files are dangerous and may damage my computer".
I searched the net for a solution to this and in some way I can't remember stopped it.
Then when I told my computer to hibernate it appeared to do so but would not turn on again without switching off the power and rebooting.
As I prefer to have hibernate than to have the codec's I uninstalled the codec's.
This did not cure the hibernate problem so then I had neither the codec or hibernate available.
At each stage I ran a full virus scan without detecting any.
To find out what was causing the problem I used a task manager program to disable start up program's and or process one at a time one a day.
Yesterday I disabled ACM wrapper from microsoft and hibernate works again fine.
Obviously I want both codec and hibernate and Windows explorer to show .avi files.
What would you do next?
Re-install the codex? if so from where?
any other advice?

    download k-lute:

    http://www.free-codecs.com/k_lite_codec_pack_download.htm

It has all the major codecs inside it and solves many audio/video play/record problems.

Thank you WilliamO I installed that and all my above problems seem to be resolved except one.
When I play video in Windows Live Photo Gallery there is no sound. This is probably down to my ignorance because when I installed the codec it gave me so many options I did not understand I just accepted what was already selected. I see there are hundreds of tweaks I can do but I don't have a clue which boxes to tick?

Did you make sure AVI was ticked? If unsure, just tick all of them. Two other programs you can install which will give codecs is realplayer and quicktime (i.e. install those and see what happens - you can always uninstall them afterwards).

sorry, misread your reply. What I meant to say is the above but also make sure (if you uninstall and then reinstall k-lite) that the correct audio settings are ticked (i.e. mp3 and wma). As said, if in doubt just tick all common audio settings (mp3, rp, wma, etc).
