driving from Calais to St Tropez, and rec. on place to stay on route ? around Lyon x

We are very exited to be driving from Calais to well Prt Grimaud near St Tropez ( husband has flight phobia ) .
Anyway we are hoping to a big leg of the journey as far as Lyon and then relax in a stopover .
We have 3 children which I think may be a problem as I really don't want to have to ork out for 2 rooms twice .
They are 3 10 Nd 17 .
Usually in UK we all bunk in a travelogue as my now 2 year old mostly sleeps in our bed anyway .
We are after somewhere which won't be too far away from the main route , so really don't want to add another hour to journey iykwim ! Also need somewhere with secure parking .
Any tips on this route would be fabulous if anyone here has done this mad journey !
I've read about the driving requirements and will arm myself with soft loo roll too ! X TIA

  • How secure does secure parking need to be ! Lots of the hotels in Beaune are used to flash motors

If you want a great route for day two google Route Napoleon
  • Try https://www.hotel-bb.com they are a French hotel chain like travelodge and the rooms sleep up to 4, they have a few hotels around Lyon.

    http://www.hotels-akena.com/ or these too

I have used both these chains in France and the car parks are always gated.

I was going to suggest Beaune too, that's where we stayed when we drove down to Port Grimaud, with a boat in tow.

  • Thanks all.

We booked the Comfort Hotel Macon Sud. In Creches sur Saone using http://www.booking.com. It was a good price, it is 5 1/2h to where we are going the next day (just looked and 5h for you!) it is 6 3/4h from Calais.

Timings work perfectly for us with tunnel etc, then after our overnight we will hopefully arrive at our villa at a good time. Overnight parking gets locked - don't know how secure it is though. Also it says you can have extra children if you contact the management.

Yes loo roll is a must! We are going mid August, but turning the other way towards Spain when we reach the coast!

we used to do this trip every year when our children were young years ago now though.
we used to stay overnight at macon there were formula 1, ibis hotels without going off route.
port grimaud is a lovely place .
we used to stay in a static caravan at pachacaid not far from port grimaud.

That is a great suggestion for Macon as the stop, because although I love Beaune, I think that you need to make a bit more progress on the first day. On the 2nd day, the OP would be able to get an early start and then navigate Lyon and cruise down via Avignon to the Riviera.
We used to stay in Formal1 hotels decades ago, but we are softies now, and usually go for a Campanille:)

Where we are stopping is just under Macon, so it should be easy the next morning to get on with the journey.

Like andygb we avoid Formula1's. my oh stays when he goes on bike trips, but prefer something better with the children.

I did find that booking.com site good for hunting out, it has a really good map that you can use to find hotels along the route you want to take.
