Hi..don't wish to sound facetious, but...[depending on where you live?] I have noted in my recent travels, a lot of companies advertising for bus drivers?

Training and driving test is given, often, and the money is not bad either...not good, and no career path as such, but hey, it puts bread on the table.. and the employer won't really care what previous qualifications the applicant has.

The above harks back to my previous post....that often, a complete change of 'career' is needed, and can be beneficial.

I cited the above simply because of my own experience [tis what I know...or knew, anyway]...but any line of work could be substituted?

I get the feeling some re-adjustment of expectation is going to be needed, to see you all through the current crisis.

You have asked [yourself??] many questions......now you need to take a practical look at your options?

Your question re-benefits is one you can find out for yourself.

There are agencies out there who can help identify these things....but in the end, only you can do the research.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Your repeat question about housing benefit has made me think I'm unclear about who has or hasn't got paid employment in your household. Has your OH got a paid job at the moment?
If you can't get a council house due to waiting lists why are you not considering my point about finding a rented place yourself and claiming housing benefit & exercising some control over where you live? Is it the deposit and reference & credit check issues? If so then get the rented house first before BR. Theres a post on here about that this weekend - might be Pippa? Advice on here also says when you stop paying people use that for deposits & fees etc. you really need to have a good read of this board as lots of people are in your situation & there's so much info/help on here.or is private rented too high in your area where the schools are and the HB wouldn't be enough so you'd have to find some money yourself to top it up?
If you go BR give up the house and you & your OH has no job then you would be able to get a rented property and get housing benefit. Yes there are limits to how much money you can get for housing benefit but infno about limits is very easily available on district council websites.
The other scenario - if your OH has a job then you need to seek advice as families on low income can get housing benefit but I'd don't know how low so you need to seek housing advice from shelter and citizens advice etc.
Alistair posted a brilliant post over the weekend about the order to do things in if you are thinking of going BR. He ended it by saying bankruptcy is the last thing you do - a bit like closing the door when you go out or something like that - I think it was Alistair. You could search his posts and find it.

I think the Ops concern was similar to mine, its almost a reverse scenario that if I cannot afford to live and go BR ie DMP fails then as my job would not allow BR then I would lose job and house and then have to find both. Work may not be an issue if you will do anything but the house may not be, also if you have defaults already rental might be an issue even pre BR, surely the only option is the hostel/relatives and then a social housing scenario if housing is available

I understand that his job may not let him practice if he goes BR so then he may end up without a job & not be able to be re-employed in that field but what I'm not clear on is does he have a job anyway at the moment.
It's a good point you make on that they may not get a rental house if they are in default already. Maybe a guarantor could help but you may not have anyone prepared to do that.
If OH can't work its not absolutely certain they will lose the house ( so that requires expert advice) and they would get SMI for 2 years I think.
Just to balance my point about private renting - there are down sides to that too as some landlords may only have a short let whilst they are trying to sell it, others could be long lets but you have the issue about you could be given 2 months notice at any time & finally I imagine that you have less hassle with social housing in getting repairs done whilst private landlords may drag their feet.
Being able to keep the house is definitely something they need expert advice on as some posters on here have said they were able to. Its obviously based on individual circumstances.
  • Yes alaistair we are prepared to make utimate restart and go back to basics I only want our kids to be happy and grow up ok, the worry is the availabilty of money post the BR is OH cannot find work or is very low paid. We would not be able to afford the mortgage Our youngest is very young so I will only be able to work around the OH if he has work.
He is working at the moment but would lose it with BR he has checked so then he has to start again.
This must have happened to other people, probably not with 3 kids in tow though :((

Sorry have not been on for a while....I wanted to come back on to ask some questions/opinions

Can a family like mine survive/recover from a bankruptcy... what are peoples views/experiences. especially as we may end up homeless

Someone has suggested looking at a DMP if we can get any work, has these worked for people and they have paid it off or do the majority of them fail would I run the risk of eventually losing my house anyway as the defaults will effect my mortgage

    Stressed at the moment.....
  • Can anyone advise I have to go offline soon

Have you tried reading the two threads that I linked to before?

The OP on those threads is in almost the same situation as you, and has expressed very similar concerns.

There's a lot of great advice on the two threads - and a lot of reassurance.

    I recomment them.
