Hi
Here's the low down on this current situation, if someone is in receipt of benefits then they can apply for a funeral grant / funeral payment assistance by completing and SF200, Typically its means tested like all benefits just another way of the DWP trying to get out of paying...
Also they wont make the decision straight away, so its down to the individual family if they want the funeral arrangements / the funeral delayed until they get confirmation of assistance
If the grant is awarded they will only make a token payment, meaning that it wont cover the total cost of the funeral, normally enough to cover the disbursements and about £600 of the funeral directors own charges...
To bear in mind a cost of a funeral consists of 2 parts, the funeral directors own charges for his service, then the disbursements are third party payments made by the funeral director ie Cemetery /crematorium, minister and doctors medical papers... even all of these average between £700 - £950, so understandably that's why funerals are that expensive..
Some hospitals have contracts a local funeral companies which are normally reserved for people who pass away with no family, you couldn't apply for funeral grant if the local authority are paying for the funeral and families have no say or no part of the arrangements, they just get told when and where.
The simplest way to go forward is to get a few funeral quotes and remove such items such as embalming and limousines as they normally hike up the price. All funeral directors should offer the basic funeral option, which is just a very simple funeral, hearse direct to the nearest crematorium or cemetery at a time to suite them. provision of a coffin... but into days climate even that type of funeral is getting expensive, averaging total cost between £2000 plus dependant on your location ...north or south
Funeral directors asking for a deposit these days is pretty much a standard practice, most companies will expect the disbursements paid up front prior to the funeral, Something to bear in mind they always use this phrase payments we make before the funeral goes head, its just a lie to make you pay... ministers are paid on the day, doctors and crematoriums are paid at the end of the month...
If you are up front with the funeral company regarding payment difficulties, then some do offer a payment plan, most don't like finding out after the even there is payment issues..
Any other advices I can offer please don't hesitate to private message me0
