Npower don't want my business....?

Options
Signed up to the Cheap Energy Club last week and went for a switch to npower accordingly. Received a letter today saying 'When we started to process your contract we discovered you have an unusual or complex type of electricity meter or metering arrangement which unfortunately means we can't supply you.' Apologies etc.

Anyone else has this? What does it mean? Nothing unusual about our meter that I know of and have switched around in the past with no problems.

And secondly, it's showing as an active application on my Cheap Energy Club account so I can't do another comparison and find the next cheapest supplier. Will this sort itself out?

Thanks for any advice!

Have you applied for a single rate tarif, but have an E7 meter? Not all suppliers will merge the two readings. If so, you'll need a meter change-around £50.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks for answering.

No, we don't have Heatwise or E7 or E10 to my knowledge. Both meters (gas and elec) only have one dial.

    smart meter?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • A Smart meter would be digital wouldn't it? Definitely not that, it's a standard dial thing that ticks over.

The I've no idea Harry, unless your running high-CAP farm or factory buildings from a domestic meter - I'm lost M8. Ask them I for one am interested to know.

  • Thanks! I feel really quite offended at their rejection!

I'll ring them tomorrow and see if they'll clarify and report back.

Hi, did you find out about this? I was in the same situation and just recently found out I have a weathercall meter. They call it complex meter too, but it looks just like any other meter. It's connected to a radio teleswitch box. I hope this helps.

Weathercall / weatherwatch was an 80's invention when E7, and indeed all leccy was 'regional'. The Weathercall / weatherwatch bit was nothing more than a 'wired mouse' type thermostat box on an external wall that communicated not with the meter, but with the 'input stat' on your storage & water heating, it over-rode the internal stat.

Put simply it read the external temp all through the day & night and made a corresponding adjustment up or down to whatever your night store heater input stat was pre-set by the [1-manual] householder to, or the [2-automatic] type night store. It simply ironed out the over / under charging of the storage of heat for both E7 & E10 systems. It was of particular use when a sudden and unexpected 'cold snap' came without warning.

That's confusing. I've been told it depends on the temperature in Glasgow airport and then receives info about that via radio. We have a black teleswitch box but no external thermostat box. We've been trying to change companies for a while, but the answer we used to get was the same one the op gets: we have a complex meter and therefore they can't supply our electricity.
