Number on zero hour contracts doubles in a year

Will the higher prices and worse service make you more likely to shop there because the staff are on a contract you approve of? If not you can see why they do it.
It is an awful shop in the first place and not particularly cheap. That isn't the fault of the local staff.
Why should a large supermarket really need to use zero hours staff? It is not like footfall can't be predicted reasonably accurately and mapped.
If the taxpayer is taking up the slack, does it matter how, if I have pay a little more for a service instead? One way or another as a consumer and tax payer I pay.
I can understand the one man band courier argument more."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

You think you are cynical;)
On balance of probability yes private sector always outwits any government initiative. Whether anything will be done about it is a different matter."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

of course all self employed business people, contractors, consultants, window cleaners, gardeners, small builders, plasterers etc etc have always been on zero hour contracts and we never thought to say how disgraceful it is/was.0

The flip side is that if an employer can take on people without the red tape and the minefield of employment law to consider then they are more likely to take them on?
I work with several other people who are also self-employed in my industry. We have no reliance on each other and are used/dropped as required as work changes. It works very well.
Maybe in the future people will be paid by productivity rather than getting a set wage regardless of what they do each month?0 -
