Which companies will add a young temporary driver?

Options
I have come across a problem with this, this year so thought it might be useful to post here, and maybe see which companies are more helpful than others. Obviously area makes a big difference too ( we are in Merseyside so probably high risk!)

Last year with Aviva I could add my 18/19 year old student daughter to my policy as a temporary driver for a total of 30 days over the year ( couldn't afford to add her to my insurance on a full term basis so this was a good compromise)

This year Endsleigh have refused to add her ( but have agreed to let me leave them with no cancellation charge as I specifically enquired about this before taking out the policy and had been told it would be possible)

A friend added her son for 6 weeks with LV, but is only allowed to do this twice in a year.

Anyone know of any other companies that will do this? I am looking to swap insurers now, but thought it would help others too.

May I bump this? My car insurance is up for renewal shortly and I am also looking for a company that will allow me to add a potential student and young driver for the university holidays.

Does anyone know of such a company, please?

  • Aviva will, but they only do 30 days temp cover a year, so for uni holidays their usual recommendation would be to add on and take away on a permanent basis as and when needed.
I work for a leading insurance company as an Insurance Advisor dealing with Commercial Insurance. Feel free to ask me any questions but please do not take what I say as correct advice at all times, as every insurance company works differently to others.

Most of them will. But it will depend on your circumstances / postcode and the actual car.

I managed to swap to Liverpool Victoria eventually. I haven't used it yet, but I know they added my friend's ( who lives locally) son for 6 weeks at a time, and will do it twice in a year.

My wife's car is insured by Saga, and we asked if they would add our 24 year old son for a weekend only,as he is visiting home. They refused. Does anyone know if a separate policy can be purchased from another insurer, and if this would cause any problem with the main policy?
    grateful thanks

Google short term insurance. But being someone elses car and short term = high risk so probably cheaper to hire a car for the weekend.
