Backpacker Insurance - no return ticket (and claim made)

My son took out a backpacker policy and didnt notice in the T&Cs that he was required to have a return ticket.
He went off to Asia and ended up having an accident which needing serious hospital treatment. The insurance company decided to take him to a centre of excellence in Bangkok where they decided to operate. He then needed a follow-up operation followed by repatriation accompanied by a doctor etc
They also told me they would cover over £1000 towards my trip out there to be with him which I did.
The insurance company asked about the return ticket during his stay in Bangkok and I told them he didnt have one so he paid them the equivelent of a standard ticket home as a contibution towards the actual cost.
He has now been asked to submit all his documents including his return ticket documentation which he doesnt have. He then saw the part about needed a return.
Given that they decided to take him to Bangkok and to commit to the majority of all the costs they paid out is there any risk they will ask him to repay them all they have paid out as he has technically breached the T&Cs?
BTW they never specifically asked him on application about the return ticket only for a return date which he provided.
