Kepping cash at home

do people think it is prudent to keep a couple of thousand in a cardboard box under the bed ?
Definitely not.
But I have thought about keeping a couple of thousand in the fireproof safe, which is bolted (from the inside) to a concrete floor, in a very awkward to get at place in my house.0 -
Good idea, close all your bank accounts and place notes under mat outside front door.0

My grandfather had £8K, in the loft and £5k in a drawer. As well as gold coins, infact he had money everywhere. Bless him, he came from a family of bankers. Seems quite apt that he chose not to leave to much in the bank.
He tried so hard to avoid the inheritance tax.:rotfl:Mortgage: Aug 12 £114,984.74 - Jun 14 £94000.00 = Total Payments £20984.74

You don`t keep cash under the mattress, you stuff the mattress with it!0

Following the problems in Cyprus, do people here keep "ready cash" at home in case the banks suddenly close their doors for a weeks or two ? Given that the Cypriots are limited to about £350 a day, do people think it is prudent to keep a couple of thousand in a cardboard box under the bed ?
( And it should read keeping not kepping *oops* )
I think I prefer to stash funds in some different jusrisdictions within the banking system, offshore etc. Mind you, if the whole banking system was shut down I would think that you would have more to worry about than cash......:)

Sure I keep some cash int he home, 3 currencies in fact.
But not because I am in a panic the banks will close, more because I need cash sometimes, and I live in a rural location and the banks (when they are open which isn't 9-5) aren't close by.
If I used my debit card to buy food, i'd just get cash back. But I don't, as I charge everything on my cashback CCs.0 -
I think the OP raises a good point. I don't have nearly enough cash to actually function normally for any period, should my Debit/Credit cards be restricted for whatever reason.
I have a security safe (limited time fire safe) in the house but it's mostly for other stuff - I actually think I should stuff some notes in there too. To Hell with the interest/inflation loss0 -
As far as security goes there is a school of thought that the majority of burglaries are drug addicts/youths (unless you are in a mansion maybe), so leaving 50-70 £ in an easily found place will mean they leg it quickly rather than trashing the place or doing something more unhygienic in the lounge... I think I'd rather invest the money in a good alarm system.0
